Many have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark (ROTLA) in its
brilliant colour format. But what if the
colour was removed? What do you
think? Can you imagine how it would
look?
Check out a short glimpse here of two scenes https://vimeo.com/36143293
If you look at the contrasty lighting it really suits the scenes. Let me know what you think. Would you want to see a B&W version?

I think black & white works perfectly for Raiders of the Lost Ark! Especially because the story is set in the 1930's, and Indy is an archaeology professor/adventurer with a great knowledge of ancient history - it's all about the past!
ReplyDeleteHaving watched many wonderful b & w films, I love seeing the great contrasts between light and dark - beautifully demonstrated here in the two scenes, especially the second one. Good on you for finding this video! I would have loved to watch the entire ROTLA in b & w.
I don't think b & w suits every movie, sometimes you do want to see those beautiful red and gold autumn leaves; the crystal clear blue lakes; the rolling green hills; the sunrise... one example that comes immediately to mind is Lawrence of Arabia - remember that famous match cut between Lawrence's lit match and the stunning desert sunrise? Wouldn't have worked in black & white! :)
Yep your right it does suit this movie, at least from the scenes we have seen. There are times for B&W just as there are times for colour but looking at those two scenes I would certainly like to see the rest of the movie in B&W for interest sake. The Director Steven Soderbergh has posted a copy in B&W but with an alternate soundtrack for "educational" purposes here http://extension765.com/sdr/18-raiders
