The Man from Hong Kong Bluray

On my recent review of The Man from Hong Kong dvd I commented that it's a shame that the great Aussie movie remains unavailable to buy apart from a German dvd (which I reviewed).
I can now say that an Australian DVD/Bluray release is planned by Umbrella Entertainment for 5th October 2016 which is great news.  Just like the recent release of the Aussie film Road Games (great release apart from the mediocre audio choice), The Man From Hong Kong will be from a new 4k master so we can expect excellent image quality.

You can get more info about the Bluray here and my review of the German dvd is here

Needless to say, my pre-order is in 😀

  1. This looks like a really excellent bluray release from Umbrella, it would be interesting to listen to the director's commentary I think, oh it even has a booklet!

You must be so excited! :)

    1. It does look quite spectacular though they are trying to fit an awful lot on one disc as shown below:

      Special Features
The Man From Hong Kong newly remastered 1080P HD release from an exclusive 4K transfer
Audio commentary featuring Director Brian Trenchard-Smith
The Making Of The Man From Hong Kong
      Newsreel Footage
Uncut Not Quite Hollywood interviews with cast members George Lazenby, Rebecca Gilling and Roger Ward, writer/director Brian Trenchard-Smith, executive producer David Hannay and second-unit cameraman John Seale.
Trailers From Hell - Brian Trenchard-Smith discusses The Man From Hong Kong
      Alternative cut of Theatrical Trailer
      HD Theatrical Trailer

      Plus:
Deathcheaters (Feature) plus Audio Commentary featuring Brian Trenchard-Smith
Stunt Rock (Feature) plus Audio Commentary featuring Brian Trenchard-Smith Promo Reel Theatrical Trailer
      Kung-Fu Killers (Feature)
      Dangerfreaks (Feature) plus Theatrical Trailer
      The Stuntmen (Feature)

So on one Bluray there will be not just the movie with special features but another 5 movies in standard definition from the same director. A stunning release for sure but will that affect the quality of the film? The movie gets released now on 26th October so I will report back with an update soon.

    1. I did start looking at it a bit and got caught on one of the extra movies called "Deathcheaters" which is about a few stuntmen. The opening sequence is fantastic with some great car action that would simply not get done these days with all the regulations in place. Essentially they drive a custom made dune buggy, powered by a punchy V8, on to the streets and try to chase down some bad guys. Why wouldn't this get made these days? Well the driver is not far behind the front wheels, the engine is at the rear and the passenger is hanging on to the roll bar whilst driving at high speed and even when they crash into stuff. Amazing!

From the small part of TMFHK I have seen it does indeed look better, but just like Road Games dont expect a full restoration like the 4K scan of some other movies like The Third Man or Citizen Kane. It looks better but is not as detailed as one would expect from a new 4K restoration. Of course all this depends greatly upon the source that was scanned and the budget!
